The Bill and Carol Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry announces a new Junior/Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Poetics, funded by a Challenge Grant awarded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, for an academic year of study, teaching, and residence in the Center. Please note that Junior Fellows are scholars who, at the beginning of the fellowship year, will be at least three years beyond receipt of the Ph.D., and normally no more than ten (i.e., who received their Ph.D.s before Fall 2006); and Post-Doctoral Fellows, who must have the Ph.D. before submission of their applications, are awarded to those who have held the Ph.D. for no more than three years before receiving the fellowship.
The Fellowship will highlight the importance of the ongoing critical, theoretical, and creative engagements with poetry across Emory University, as well as marking the emergence of the Robert W. Woodruff Library’s Manuscripts, Archives, and Rare Books Library (MARBL) as a major center for research in poetry. F or more information on MARBL, please see <http://marbl.library.emory.edu/>.
The general purpose of the FCHI’s Junior/Post-Doctoral Fellows Program is to stimulate and support humanistic research of scholars in the early stages of their careers with time, space, and other resources. An essential feature of the Program is that Fellows are expected to make intellectual contributions not only within the Center but, more widely, to humanistic studies at Emory University. Thus Poetics Fellows will be expected to offer an upper-level undergraduate course on a subject of their choice during the spring of their fellowship year.
Stipends of $40,000 will be offered to Junior/Post-Doctoral Fellows in Poetics. In addition, a research budget of $2000will be made available to each Fellow, along with shared office space in the Center and access to the Emory University Libraries.
The FCHI Fellows Program is designed to offer research opportunities both to those trained in the humanities as traditionally defined and to others working with humanistic issues. Research projects must be humanistic, but fellows may hold the Ph.D. in any discipline. Especially appropriate are applicants whose research is likely to contribute to intellectual exchange among a diverse group of scholars within the disciplines of the humanities.
Because the FCHI is a residential center, its intellectual life depends on collegial interaction. Fellows will be expected to be in residence full-time during both terms of the regular academic year and to take an active part in the life of the FCHI, as well as in the intellectual life of the larger University. Since a primary purpose of the Junior and Post-Doctoral Fellows Program is to create a diverse community of scholars in residence at the Center as well as to introduce Emory University to promising work beyond its walls, currently preference will be given to applicants who are not now affiliated with Emory.
Applications will be judged on the promise and significance of the proposed research project, in relation to the applicant’s own work and that of other scholars; the intellectual distinction of the applicant’s previous work; the applicant’s ability to engage in collegial interactions that will substantively contribute to the FCHI and to the University; and the contributions that the applicant’s proposed course will make to the College.
Evaluators will look for applicants and projects that will benefit from and contribute to the interdisciplinary nature of the group of Fellows and the work of the FCHI. They will also be seeking variety and balance among the disciplines represented at the Center.

In ascertaining the eligibility of their projects, potential applicants might find useful the definition offered in the Act that set up the National Foundation for the Arts and Humanities: “The humanities include, but are not limited to, the following fields: history, philosophy, languages, literature, linguistics, archeology, jurisprudence, history and criticism of the arts, ethics, comparative religion, and those aspects of the social sciences employing historical or philosophical approaches. This last category includes cultural anthropology, sociology, political theory, international relations, and other subjects concerned with questions of value….”

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2009 @ 4:00pm (EST) IS THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS AND ALL SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all materials, including letters of recommendation, reach the FCHI by the 26 February 2009 deadline. Incomplete applications will not be considered after the deadline.

Previous funding for related projects may be taken into consideration when the application is reviewed and may influence FCHI funding.

2. Project Abstract and Interdisciplinary Statement: Both should be double spaced and both should be strictly limited to 100 words or less each. In the Interdisciplinary Statement, applicants should indicate how residency at an interdisciplinary humanities research center would enhance their work.
3. Curriculum Vitae: No more than 3 pages should be submitted.
4. Description of Project (1000 words maximum, double spaced): Applicants should describe the specific research planned for the period of the FCHI Fellowship, explaining the basic humanistic ideas, problems, or questions to be explored. Included should be explanations of the objectives and significance of the project, and the methodology to be employed.
This description should make clear any preliminary work already completed, the present state of the proposed research, and any stages to be completed after the FCHI Fellowship ends. Applicants should detail the expected results of research during the Fellowship period, including the ultimate forms of public presentation of their results (books, journal articles, lectures, papers, editions, etc.).
5. Timeline for Project: A one-page outline of plans and goals for the project during the Fellowship year, including expected dates of completion for each, should be included. Applicant should be as precise as possible about activities during the Fellowship period. Please remember that Fellows are expected to be in residence at the FCHI full-time each semester.
6. Course Description Worksheet: Besides the opportunity for individual research and writing, FCHI Junior and Postdoctoral Fellowships are awarded to promote an exchange of ideas among the Fellows during their time in the Center, as well as to encourage interactions between the Fellows and the Emory community. Thus Junior and Post-Doctoral Fellows are expected to offer an upper-level undergraduate course on a subject of their choice during the spring of their fellowship year.
The Fellows’ courses will be offered in the College curriculum under IDS 385, Special Topics in Interdisciplinary Studies. Applicants should include the title, a short course description of no more than 20 lines, texts to be used, and any departments or programs with which the course might be cross-listed.
7. Letters of Recommendation: Three (3) letters should be submitted directly to FCHI. Please send a copy of “Information for Referees” to your three letter writers, along with a copy of your proposal. All supporting letters must be received via mail, fax, or email by Thursday, February 26, 2009.

Upon notification of a FCHI Junior and Post-Doctoral Fellows Program Award, recipients must agree to:
(a) conduct research in residence full-time at the FCHI for the academic year;
(b) take full responsibility for contributing to and maintaining an environment conducive to academic research while at the Center;
(c) submit a final report of progress at the end of the Fellowship;
(d) acknowledge the FCHI in all work resulting from research and writing during the Fellowship;
(e) teach an undergraduate course in the spring term of the Fellowship year;
(f) attend all Fellows’ lunches, lectures and programs sponsored by the FCHI during their terms of residence;
(g) immediately notify the FCHI of any other support or of any conflicts with the restrictions and conditions of this Fellowship Program;
(h) for three years following the Fellowship, provide written reports to the Director of the FCHI detailing how their teaching and research has been influenced by the time spent during the Fellowship;
(i) if applicable, return to their Emory University positions for the year immediately following their Fellowship.
If you accept another fellowship before notification about the FCHI Program, please notify the FCHI as soon as possible.
If for any reason a Fellow’s circumstances change (such as Sabbatical Leave, Leave Without Pay, or the receipt of any grant or award that conflicts with the conditions of this Fellowship), and the grantee is unable to use the Fellowship during the academic year for which it was granted, the Fellowship will be forfeited.
